Paul Conway Shields is committed to delivering high quality fire training. Our trainings are designed to provide students the essential skills required during emergency operations. Whether you choose from one of our single subject classes or need a training custom designed for your department, our goal is to provide experience-based instruction that will enhance your departmental operations.

Courses

Engine Company Operations

The class will cover the skills required during engine company operations. Students will receive instruction in selecting, stretching, and advancing hose lines. Students will learn techniques to advance hose lines effectively with available staffing.

Ladder Company Operations

This class will cover the basics of ladder company operations. Students will receive instruction in conventional forcible entry, search, victim removal, ventilation, and laddering techniques.

Forcible Entry

 This class will provide the students with a mix of classroom and hands-on forcible entry training. Techniques for conventional and thru-the-lock forcible entry will be covered. The thru-the-lock training will provide students with techniques to defeat locks with little or no damage to the door. In addition, students will apply the techniques they learned in the classroom to size up and defeat inward and outward swinging doors.

Auto Extrication

This class will be taught through a mix of classroom and hands-on training. Students will learn the necessary skills to perform a successful vehicle extrication. Topics will include scene and vehicle size up, stabilization, glass management, securing power to the vehicle and extrication techniques.

Not-So-Technical

Rescue Operations

This class will focus on utilizing equipment found on engine and ladder companies to mitigate incidents commonly viewed as “Technical Rescue”. Topics will include basic knots and webbing uses, lifting and stabilization, moving patients vertically in a stokes, and removing civilians/firefighters using ladders and mechanical advantage.

Fully Customized

Fire Training

Paul Conway Fire Training will design a custom training to meet your department’s needs. PCS Fire Training personnel will meet with your department to design a training that fits your department’s staffing levels, equipment and needs.

 

 

 

Course Formats (Ideal Class Size = 12-24 students)

Department Hosted / Open Enrollment

These are 8-hour classes based on subjects from our course list. These classes can be for your department members only, or your department can host an open enrollment class. Our instructors will come to your facility and provide hands-on training.

Drill Night

Paul Conway Shields will work with your department to provide a 3 – 4-hour class. These classes are formatted to work with your departments drill night schedule. Working from our list of core classes, our instructors will design a training that will maximize your training hours.

Fully Customized Fire Training

Our instructors will meet with you to tailor a class to fit your departments specific needs. Taking into consideration your existing equipment and manpower, we will work with you to design classes that will enhance your member’s ability to effectively work at emergency scenes.

 

 

Instructors

McNulty

Brian McNulty is an 18-year veteran of the Milwaukee Fire Department and is currently assigned as the Captain of Rescue Company #2. Brian has over 14 years of technical rescue experience and has been a director of the department’s technical rescue team for the past 7 years. Brian is a state-certified instructor, an instructor for FDIC’s Hands-On Training Classes, the State of Wisconsin’s REACT Center, and the Milwaukee Fire Department’s Training Academy.

McMenamin

Tom McMenamin is a 28-year veteran of the Milwaukee Fire Department and is currently assigned as a Lieutenant of Rescue Company #2. Tom has over 20 years of technical rescue experience specializing in structural collapse operations. For the past 10 years, as an instructor with the Illinois Fire Service Institute, Tom has taught classes in structural collapse, rapid intervention, fire attack and suppression techniques.

Scherer

Steve Scherer is a 24-year veteran of the Milwaukee Fire Department and is currently assigned as a Lieutenant at Rescue Company #2. As a member of the MFD’s Heavy Urban Rescue Team, he has over 22 years of technical rescue experience and has been a lead instructor for both rope and trench rescue operations. Steve is a state-certified instructor and holds an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science.

Miller

Tim Miller is a 31-year veteran of the fire service. Tim started his career with the West Milwaukee Fire Department. He joined the Milwaukee Fire Department in 1991 and is currently assigned as a Heavy Equipment Operator with Rescue Company #2. Tim has been a member of the fire department’s Heavy Urban Rescue Team for the past 22 years. Tim frequently delivers classes in both forcible entry and auto extrication. He is also an instructor for the department’s Heavy Lifting, Stabilization & New Tactics Committee

Parello

Craig Parello is a 17-year veteran of the Milwaukee Fire Department and a United States Marine Corps veteran. Craig is a Firefighter currently assigned to Rescue Company #2. Craig has extensive background in vertical roof operations and has been an instructor at the Milwaukee Fire Department’s Training Academy and a Hands-On Instructor at FDIC in Indianapolis. Craig is also a member of the fire department’s Heavy Urban Rescue Team and serves as an instructor for the department’s Heavy Lifting, Stabilization & New Tactics Committee.

Goodwin

James Goodwin is a 16-year veteran of the Milwaukee Fire Department currently assigned as a Firefighter to Rescue Company #2. James is a frequent instructor at the Milwaukee Fire Department’s Training Academy, delivering classes in both forcible entry and auto extrication. James has over 8 years of technical rescue experience and currently serves as an instructor for the department’s Heavy Lifting Program.
